Next, I will list supplements & herbs that are associated or found to be effective lowering prolactin and refractory period.

Vitamin B6 megadosing

Reduce prolactin with P-5-P

Vitamin B6 is probably the most common vitamin which people declare to lower prolactin. According to animal and human studies, it’s generally noted that vitamin B6 have a suppressing effect on prolactin levels.

However, most of these human studies were made with IV injections, and those kind blood levels of vitamin B6 are almost impossible to achieve via oral usage (supplements).

B6 prolactin studies:
The small study1Moretti C, Fabbri A, Gnessi L, Bonifacio V, Fraioli F, Isidori A. Pyridoxine (B6) suppresses the rise in prolactin and increases the rise in growth hormone induced by exercise. N Engl J Med. 1982 Aug 12;307(7):444-5. doi: 10.1056/NEJM198208123070719. PMID: 7088124. noted that B6 vitamin (pyridoxine) seems to suppress the rise in prolactin during exercise.

Study on healthy women:

“After vitamin B6 24 hrs pattern of ACTH and cortisol is unchanged; prolactin levels are slightly lower, in a statistically unsignificant proportion the night peak of growth hormone is higher in a statistically significant proportion (p. 0.05).”2[Influence of administration of pyridoxine on circadian rhythm of plasma ACTH, cortisol prolactin and somatotropin in normal subjects]. Boll Soc Ital Biol Sper. 1984 Feb 28;60(2):273-8. Italian. PMID: 6324828.

B6 Intravenous therapy on healthy subjects:

“A single dose of pyridoxine(300 mg iv)produced significant rises in peak levels of immunoreactive growth hormone(GH)and significant decrease of plasma prolactin(PRL) in 8 hospitalized healthy subjects.” 3Delitala G, Masala A, Alagna S, Devilla L. Effect of pyridoxine on human hypophyseal trophic hormone release: a possible stimulation of hypothalamic dopaminergic pathway. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 1976 Mar;42(3):603-6. doi: 10.1210/jcem-42-3-603. PMID: 1254699.

How much vitamin B6 to take?
Personally doses from 200-400mg (of of these 2-4 capsules iHerb) a day seems to work like magic for lowering refractory period and adding up sex drive (on top of regular multivitamin or B-complex).

While the effect is not big as with Mucuna Pruriens (which we look later) it’s easy to notice harder erection and reduced time to get back in action.

It’s recommended to use high doses of vitamin B6 only in those days when you need more sex drive. Remember that prolonged use of vitamin B6  is toxic. High doses of vitamin B6  (+200mg day) can cause nerve pain or even peripheral neuropathy.4Hadtstein F, Vrolijk M. Vitamin B-6-Induced Neuropathy: Exploring the Mechanisms of Pyridoxine Toxicity. Adv Nutr. 2021 Oct 1;12(5):1911-1929. doi: 10.1093/advances/nmab033. PMID: 33912895; PMCID: PMC8483950. But using high doses once or two times per week is generally safe.

What to look when selecting vitamin B6 supplement?
When selecting your vitamin B6 supplement, it’s wise to pay attention to the form of vitamin b6. For most people, the best choice for B6 vitamin is the natural Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P-5-P) form. Many people might have the genetic polymer that makes it so you can’t even convert other forms to absorbable bioactive form.

Personally, I use this B-Complex (iHerb) which contains active form B vitamins. If your diet in relatively good condition one capsule in a day is enough to guarantee an ideal intake of all B-vitamins.

However, if you just want to try high doses of the active form of B6. The Life Extension P-5-P B6 supplement which contains 100mg of an active form of B6 per capsule is great choice.

Mucuna Pruriens

Reduce prolactin with Mucuna Pruriens

Mucuna Pruriens is a very interesting herb native from Africa and Asian. Mucuna Pruriens is well-studied to raise testosterone levels and reduce prolactin levels. Studies have also shown that Mucuna Pruriens lower cortisol levels and boost mood. Mucuna Pruriens is one of rare herb that contains L-dopa, which is the precursor of dopamine.

The study made in India noted that 5 gram of Mucuna Pruriens seed powder daily for 3 months dropped 19% prolactin and raised 27% testosterone levels on healthy men. The result was even better with infertile men, whose prolactin levels dropped 32% and testosterone levels raised 39%.

“Treatment with M. pruriens significantly improved T, LH, dopamine, adrenaline, and noradrenaline levels in infertile men and reduced levels of FSH and PRL. Sperm count and motility were significantly recovered in infertile men after treatment.”5Shukla KK, Mahdi AA, Ahmad MK, Shankhwar SN, Rajender S, Jaiswar SP. Mucuna pruriens improves male fertility by its action on the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis. Fertil Steril. 2009 Dec;92(6):1934-40. doi: 10.1016/j.fertnstert.2008.09.045. Epub 2008 Oct 29. PMID: 18973898.

There are also other studies where Mucuna Pruriens have raised testosterone levels, improves semen quality and lowered cortisol & prolactin levels.

“Treatment with M. pruriens significantly ameliorated psychological stress and seminal plasma lipid peroxide levels along with improved sperm count and motility. On the basis of results of the present study, it may be concluded that M. pruriens not only reactivates the anti-oxidant defense system of infertile men but it also helps in the management of stress and improves semen quality.”6Shukla KK, Mahdi AA, Ahmad MK, Jaiswar SP, Shankwar SN, Tiwari SC. Mucuna pruriens Reduces Stress and Improves the Quality of Semen in Infertile Men. Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. 2010 Mar;7(1):137-44. doi: 10.1093/ecam/nem171. Epub 2007 Dec 18. PMID: 18955292; PMCID: PMC2816389.

“On the basis of these observations, it may be proposed that M. pruriens seed powder not only reactivates the enzymatic activity of metabolic pathways and energy metabolism but also rejuvenates the harmonic balance of male reproductive hormones in infertile men.7Gupta A, Mahdi AA, Ahmad MK, Shukla KK, Bansal N, Jaiswer SP, Shankhwar SN. A proton NMR study of the effect of Mucuna pruriens on seminal plasma metabolites of infertile males. J Pharm Biomed Anal. 2011 Jul 15;55(5):1060-6. doi: 10.1016/j.jpba.2011.03.010. Epub 2011 Mar 11. PMID: 21459537.

How to use Mucuna Pruriens?
It is not recommended to use mucuna pruriens constantly as a testosterone booster. Mainly because mucuna contains glycoprotein that can reduce your protein digestion. And generally speaking, its always good idea to cycle supplements that boost dopamine levels so you don’t get used to it.

I take mucuna pruriens only on those days when I have a hot date or spend a night with a woman. Before those dates I take a few capsules of mucuna extract (iHerb) and always experience better “fuckability”, meaning that I can have sex longer, or orgasm around 3-5 times in an evening.

Women always wonder how I just keep coming hard, even though I’ve cummed 4-5 times already in a span of an evening. (Honestly, I could not do it without mucuna.)

Usually, it’s best to take mucuna few hours before a sexual encounter, preferably on an empty stomach.

Reminder: Mucuna pruriens contains L-DOPA and might cause side effects with certain medications. Generally is not recommended to use mucuna pruriens if you have a history of melanoma or blood glucose disorders, or are taking antidepressant medication.

Ashwagandha reduce prolactin

ashwagandha-lowers-prolactin
Ashwagandha lowers prolactin

Withania Somnifera aka ashwagandha is well-known for its ability to reduce stress and raise testosterone. However few people know that ashwagandha is also good for lowering prolactin levels.

In the study8Mahdi AA, Shukla KK, Ahmad MK, Rajender S, Shankhwar SN, Singh V, Dalela D. Withania somnifera Improves Semen Quality in Stress-Related Male Fertility. Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. 2009 Sep 29;2011:576962. doi: 10.1093/ecam/nep138. Epub ahead of print. PMID: 19789214; PMCID: PMC3136684. made with a normal sperm but infertile individuals, a single dose of ashwagandha (5 g/day) for 90 days lowered prolactin levels about 12%. Also, their testosterone levels rise 10-22% depending on subpopulation (10% infertile smokers, 13% infertile non-smoking, 22% infertile under stress).

Ashwagandha has been shown to effectively decrease cortisol,9Chandrasekhar K, Kapoor J, Anishetty S. A prospective, randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled study of safety and efficacy of a high-concentration full-spectrum extract of ashwagandha root in reducing stress and anxiety in adults. Indian J Psychol Med. 2012 Jul;34(3):255-62. doi: 10.4103/0253-7176.106022. PMID: 23439798; PMCID: PMC3573577. therefore it is good for those suffering from stress. As you learned above, stress can raise your prolactin levels.

Recently ashwagandha’s efficiency was demonstrated with healthy young people. The recent study10Wankhede S, Langade D, Joshi K, Sinha SR, Bhattacharyya S. Examining the effect of Withania somnifera supplementation on muscle strength and recovery: a randomized controlled trial. J Int Soc Sports Nutr. 2015 Nov 25;12:43. doi: 10.1186/s12970-015-0104-9. PMID: 26609282; PMCID: PMC4658772. shows that 300mg Ashwagandha extract (KSM-66 2 times daily) raised serum testosterone 15% compared to the placebo group, where an increase was only 2%. Also, muscle strength increased in the KSM-66 group.

For ashwagandha supplements, it is best to take the KSM-66 extract which has shown amazing results even on healthy male subjects. For general health, testosterone and prolactin lowering effects I take this product 600 mg daily (2 capsules).

Vitamin E and prolactin

vitamin-e-lower-prolactin
Does vitamin E reduce prolactin?

Vitamin E plays an important role in hormone production. Unfortunately, many people are suffering from vitamin E deficiency. Council for Responsible Nutrition paper11Wallace TC, McBurney M, Fulgoni VL 3rd. Multivitamin/mineral supplement contribution to micronutrient intakes in the United States, 2007-2010. J Am Coll Nutr. 2014;33(2):94-102. doi: 10.1080/07315724.2013.846806. PMID: 24724766. indicates that 67% of people in the U.S. won’t get enough vitamin E from their diet. Deficiency of vitamin E might have a devastating effect on your erection and sex drive.

While there is one study12Yeksan M, Polat M, Türk S, Kazanci H, Akhan G, Erdogan Y, Erkul I. Effect of vitamin E therapy on sexual functions of uremic patients in hemodialysis. Int J Artif Organs. 1992 Nov;15(11):648-52. PMID: 1490755. where 300 mg vitamin E daily for 2 months decreased prolactin about 50%, this study was done on uremic patients on hemodialysis. It’s hard to say will vitamin E reduce prolactin on healthy people, according to one study.

At least there is one study where vitamin E raised testosterone levels.13Umeda F, Kato K, Muta K, Ibayashi H. Effect of vitamin E on function of pituitary-gonadal axis in male rats and human subjects. Endocrinol Jpn. 1982 Jun;29(3):287-92. doi: 10.1507/endocrj1954.29.287. PMID: 6816576. However, in one study vitamin E supplementation decreased androgen levels on older men.14Hartman TJ, Dorgan JF, Woodson K, Virtamo J, Tangrea JA, Heinonen OP, Taylor PR, Barrett MJ, Albanes D. Effects of long-term alpha-tocopherol supplementation on serum hormones in older men. Prostate. 2001 Jan 1;46(1):33-8. doi: 10.1002/1097-0045(200101)46:1<33::aid-pros1005>3.0.co;2-6. PMID: 11170129.

As always it’s a good idea to try to get more vitamin E from real food. For my experience adding food high in vitamin E to your diet boost sex drive noticeably. For example foods high in vitamin E: spinach, egg yolks, avocados, almonds, brazil nuts, and sunflower seeds.

When needed I also take this vitamin E supplement (iHerb) which is a mix of different natural tocopherols extracted from vegetables. If you are already eating a lot vitamin E containing foods it’s hard to say will it give any benefit to your sex drive. Of course, its different story if you are on vitamin E deficiency (like most people are).

Zinc and prolactin

Zinc and prolactin

Most people supplement zinc mainly to support optimal levels of testosterone, but it might also lower prolactin levels.

Oral zinc has been show to lower prolactin levels in healthy subjects.

“The response of plasma prolactin (PRL) to oral administration of increasing doses of zinc (25.0, 37.5 and 50.0 mg) was studied in 17 normal adult men and women. Blood samples were collected at 10 and 30-min intervals over a period of 120 min after two basal times (-30 and 0 min). PRL concentrations significantly fell below basal levels in all subjects in response to the increase in plasma zinc levels, as compared to the controls.15Brandão Néto J, de Mendonça BB, Shuhama T, Marchini JS, Madureira G, Pimenta WP, Tornero MT. Zinc: an inhibitor of prolactin (PRL) secretion in humans. Horm Metab Res. 1989 Apr;21(4):203-6. doi: 10.1055/s-2007-1009191. PMID: 2753470.

Another zinc study with male hemodialysis patients showed a massive decrease on prolactin levels.

“Zinc and prolactin levels were measured in 32 male haemodialysis patients; 12 were receiving 50 mg zinc per day as zinc acetate and 20 were not. Zinc-treated patients had significantly higher plasma zinc levels (134±10 μg/dl v 88±2 μg/dl) and lower serum prolactin levels (11±4 ng/ml v 29±7 ng/ml) than untreated patients. “16Mahajan SK, Hamburger RJ, Flamenbaum W, Prasad AS, McDonald FD. Effect of zinc supplementation on hyperprolactinaemia in uraemic men. Lancet. 1985 Oct 5;2(8458):750-1. doi: 10.1016/s0140-6736(85)90630-0. PMID: 2864486.

2 studies show that zinc supplement did not lower prolactin levels on people with chronic kidney disease. However, patients serum testosterone levels increased.

“Serum level of FSH and prolactin did not have any significant changes before and after intervention, but serum level of testosterone, LH, and zinc increased significantly.”17Jalali GR, Roozbeh J, Mohammadzadeh A, Sharifian M, Sagheb MM, Hamidian Jahromi A, Shabani S, Ghaffarpasand F, Afshariani R. Impact of oral zinc therapy on the level of sex hormones in male patients on hemodialysis. Ren Fail. 2010 May;32(4):417-9. doi: 10.3109/08860221003706958. PMID: 20446777.

“We conclude that oral Zn administration in patients with CRF significantly increases both total and Zn-bound thymulin, but does not modify basal and TRH-stimulated serum PRL levels.”18Travaglini P, Moriondo P, Togni E, Venegoni P, Bochicchio D, Conti A, Ambroso G, Ponticelli C, Mocchegiani E, Fabris N, et al. Effect of oral zinc administration on prolactin and thymulin circulating levels in patients with chronic renal failure. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 1989 Jan;68(1):186-90. doi: 10.1210/jcem-68-1-186. PMID: 2909550.

How to take zinc optimally?
These results suggest it may be worth to take zinc supplement before sexual intercourse. Personally, I never do that.

I usually take it right before going to sleep. I alternate between Zinc picolinate, and zinc glycinate or OptiZinc (links to iHerb) all of them are good choices.

Zinc is really important mineral to human’s hormones and sexual functions. It might be worth to supplement zinc even you are not interested to reduce prolactin levels.

Cloves Syzygium aromaticum

cloves-for-erection
Cloves for refractory period

Cloves were mainly used as a spice, but lately, it has also become accepted as aphrodisiac and testosterone booster. Unfortunately, with cloves, you have to rely on people’s experiences and animal studies.

There are currently no human studies if cloves can influence prolactin levels in humans. However, there are animal studies where cloves have shown good results.

Oral administration of the extract significantly increased the Mounting Frequency, Intromission Frequency; Intromission Latency, Erections; Quick Flips, Long Flips as well as aggregate of penile reflexes and caused significant reduction in the Mounting Latency and Post Ejaculatory Interval.19Tajuddin, Ahmad S, Latif A, Qasmi IA. Effect of 50% ethanolic extract of Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & Perry. (clove) on sexual behaviour of normal male rats. BMC Complement Altern Med. 2004 Nov 5;4:17. doi: 10.1186/1472-6882-4-17. PMID: 15530165; PMCID: PMC534794.

Also, small doses of cloves seem to raise testosterone levels in mice, but if you take it too much it might lower your testosterone (study with clove extracts).20Mishra RK, Singh SK. Safety assessment of Syzygium aromaticum flower bud (clove) extract with respect to testicular function in mice. Food Chem Toxicol. 2008 Oct;46(10):3333-8. doi: 10.1016/j.fct.2008.08.006. Epub 2008 Aug 15. PMID: 18765266.

Personally, I have good experiences with cloves. I use ground cloves (iHerb) regularly on my morning coffee along with cinnamon. Alternatively, clove capsules are great for easier clove ingestion.

Conclusion

It is definitely possible to lower prolactin levels with natural supplements and herbs. However, it really depends on each individual how it affects their sex drive and ability to have an erection after orgasm.

The refractory period is also depended on many factors, like age, genetics, general sex drive and even partners attractiveness to you. In my experience, partners sexual lust towards you also affects it greatly. So remember that supplements or herbs are just one part of the bigger picture.

Please note these are just my notes and experiences from the products I’ve used to “hack” my erection and refractory period.

This list is not yet complete and I may further update this in the future. Everything here is for information purposes, not medical advice. I’ll only share what worked for me, and I am in no way implying that these results are typical.

As always it’s good to check with your doctor before you start to use any supplements. Especially if you are using medications or suffering from a disease.

  1. Almost impotent 34 years old male with no morning erections and completely dependent on viagra. All blood test done, urologist examination, all normal but relative low test. 378ng/dl – Viagra prescription.
About month ago started applying your testosterone boosting tips and now prolactin supplements. Nowadays wake up every morning with a hard erection and wont need any viarga. Life changing stuff, specially ashwagandha.

  2. Is there a way to raise prolactin to get a script from a Doctor for a drug to lower it once and for all. My old GP. have me Cabergoline but I had to switch docs and this one is an idiot when it comes to make anorgasmia and I can’t get another GP where I live in Canada da da. 4 real.
